The Festival. What's that all about then?
There’s only a week to go now until the 2021 Blythe Hill Fields Festival and we wanted to explain a bit more about why and how we do this each year.
For a start, its great fun! We love how the festival connects local people together, whether they are volunteering, working on the small business stalls or attending. The park is also for everyone to enjoy and the festival is such a great way to make sure local people know that its here. The event also allows the Friends to meet local people and to hear their views on what needs doing in the park. After all, it was feedback from past festivals that highlighted the need for a free drinking fountain which has proven extremely popular now that it is in and working.
The festival is also one of the ways that funds are raised for the park. There are some costs involved in putting it on for things like loo hire, insurance, printing, etc. but these are kept to a minimum by the volunteers and the festival therefore adds a reliable annual source of funding for projects. This is in addition to funding pots that the Friends manage from sources such as the Lewisham Greening Fund.
Its worth saying that there is no way we could do the Festival without our amazing volunteers and sponsors. These are all local people and businesses who love the park. We are so very grateful to all of them!
Please come and see us in the Friends tent located off the main north-south path on the day. You can help the Fields by buying tea towels, cakes or plants, grabbing some BBQ food or purchasing a raffle ticket to win one of our great prizes. And we’ll also be there to answer any questions, sign up new volunteers and hear views on future park projects.
See you next week!
